An ethereal Los Angeles sunset with pink sand wisps and warm winter waves.

Venice Vibes

I’ve always had a bit of a love affair with California. Though growing up on the complete other side of the country, I always felt like California just got me. It was the first place I ever traveled to on my own and would happily revisit year after year for YouTube conventions. In fact, in 2012 I spent a large amount of time planning to move out to Los Angeles to see what I could make of myself there. Plans with friends to move out there fell through, and instead I ended up with eyes on the UK where I eventually came to call my home.

That being said, every time I visit California it’s still through the eyes of that young college kid with his head full of dreams and possibilities of his life in the gold coast. Each and every sunset is a stunner, and it blows me away how people here just get used to it. Eh, it’s just another day… No!

My friends and I drove to a rooftop bar off of Venice Beach to watch the sunset from above on the windiest day I’ve ever experienced out there. None of us were adequately dressed for the cold winds and my fingers were slow and in need of a thaw. The wind was so strong that it was nearly impossible to steady my 70-200 lens held in my hands as the gusts kept pushing me this way and that.

But the strong winds gave the scene much more ethereal properties. The sand on the beach took to the air forming a beige fog on the shoreline and huge waves crashed along the coast. The low sun crept under the wind-carried sand, further colouring it in the pinkish hues of the dying day.

Framing the horizon and shoreline on my thirds lines I then sought to frame the lifeguard shack right in between the trees to look out at the sea. I managed to take another photo from this exact angle 30 minutes after and though there was so much more detail to the sky, a seagull framed perfectly and more dynamic range, there was something more magical about the slow gradient of orange to blue to pink and the silhouettes of the palm trees. There was much more beauty in the not-knowing that mirrored my excitement with the state oh so many years ago. Sometimes its the wonder of the what if that makes all the difference.
