One of the nice things about never leaving the house without your camera is you can end up taking some amazing photos linked to some specific times in your life. It was summer 2021, and I had just placed a reservation on the first flat of my own in London. Things were so exciting and so scary. I only had 2 weeks left in the place I’d called home for 4 years in Chiswick, and the house-buying process in the UK can’t take too much longer than that, right?

I was walking back from a fancy salad place near Russell Square when the light dappling through the trees absolutely caught my eye. The sun shone so bright that day and it created such beautiful patterns on the buildings and the street. A couple passed by hand-in-hand chatting and laughing away. Two girls cycled past on arguably one of the nicest days to do so. I crisscrossed the street searching for a way to capture the day.
Eventually I managed to find a spot right on the side of the road where I could have the foliage above follow the rooftops across the street. Ensuring the leading lines from the street and the leaves went right out of frame, I just needed a subject for the foreground. Well, nothing screams London quite like a big, shiny, red bus! I managed to capture this one while the red of a boris bike crept into frame so 3 dashes of red allow the eye to flitter about the shot. Stopping down to F/4.0 ensured all of the foreground was in focus while allowing a natural drop off as the lamps shrunk into the distance to the old, red pub in the background.
I loved it. The flat took so much longer than I expected to get, but I’ll never forget that hopeful, exciting, and terrifying part of my life where I awaited the next chapter of my story and the ability to call this beautiful city my home for good.
