Lost and Found

I love that the word “capture” is used in photography because that’s really what it feels like. I’ve captured this moment. Photography is one of the few things I do in life where I’m so incredibly present with everything around me. Even when I’m not actively taking photos, due to having taken so many, my eyes are always naturally hunting for patterns and interesting shapes and lines. This is one of those cases.

My girlfriend, my friend John, and I were walking back to our hotel in San Sebastian along this grand horseshoe of a beach. The sun is high, the waves are rolling in, and the gang and I are trying to burn off all the pintxhos we had just devoured. John is in the middle of telling us a funny story when I look up at the sky and see it.

“Sorry!” I exclaim running forward, “I have to get this!”

Puzzled with what exactly seemed to have spurred this rapid change in my demeanour, both sit back on a nearby bench to watch me frantically set up my tripod. I had scoped a variation of this composition out multiple times the day before going back and forth from the hotel, but it was always missing something. That was until now! One single, wispy cirrus cloud sprawled out across the sky like a diaphanous arrow pointing at the tower on the hill.

The amount of paths I could see in this image! A large letter E could be seen following the beach line to the green hill and along the cloud. And another still could be seen following the path of the buildings! I knew I really didn’t have much time before the cloud lost shape, but I also needed to get just the right timing to ground the photo with an interesting subject. I managed to get my shot with a beachgoer striding along right in the centre of my composition.

Shooting at f/8.0 allowed the entirety of the image to be as sharp as could be so you could pick out the details in the buildings on the hill as well as in the waves of the beach and because it was so bright, I also got to shoot with a fast shutter speed to ensure my subject’s motion was caught exactly in time. I was so incredibly pleased I got my shot as after a moment, it was gone as quickly as it had come. These are the types of shots where if you’re not paying attention, it’ll come and go with you none the wiser. But that’s why I’m always searching to capture these moments before they’re lost forever.
