One of my favourites from series 2. Warm, urban, and minimal, this one really tricks the eye the longer the you look at it.
Long Road Home
Ding!
The elevator doors opened onto the 30th floor. The midsummer sun was draped across the room like a warm throw blanket. Walking through the landing, I opened the outer door to get a clear look at the skyline. Were this sometime last year I might have been searching for a wide angle composition tying the meander of the Thames in with the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, but more recently, I’d been using my telephoto lens to tell a story more abstract.
The joy of using a telephoto lens is you get to pick out the most interesting parts of a composition and like a scientist with a microscope peer into the beauty of the life in the details. Looking below, what really caught my eye was a humble slip road. The late evening sun cast such long shadows on the street below, and the swooping lines of the thoroughfare almost gave the appearance that the road was going straight to the sky.
After firing off a few shots of your standard traffic, the perfect subject finally entered my scene: a red-clad cyclist on his commute home. So long a road and so small he looked from my vantage point up in the clouds. I lined up my shot and then Snap! I got him right where I wanted.
At this point I still felt so new to telephoto photography, but something about this photo just felt so special to me. A week later I met up with a friend after we went to a Madeon gig and he showed me his phone wallpaper; it was this very photo. That was all the encouragement I needed to get out there and start shooting more. Thanks Matt.
