Foggy Boat

It’s always worth it to go out there and get that shot no matter the time of day. This pre-sunrise photo proved to be such an eerily, beautiful image that I was incredibly happy to capture. The thick levels of fog enshrouding the foreground boat and Kew Railway Bridge provide such a rare perspective on what is normally a bright and cheery little part of the Thames. Looking at the detail in the print, I can almost hear the soft, quietness of that morning filling me with calm.

Foggy Boat

THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

What a rude awakening. Not a second past 7AM and a delivery driver there to deliver a package to my housemate Phoenix had pounded on the door to alert us of his presence. I groaned as I crawled down the stairs to answer the door. As I opened the door with a painted on smile, my expression suddenly changed to one of awe and wonder. My street was completely engulfed in a dense, grey fog. "What a rare sight," I thought as I signed for the oversized parcel. Checking my watch I realised the sun hadn't even risen yet. I was still barely awake, but the thought popped into my head. Opportunities like this don't come every day! Photographers don't get their best shots by sleeping in. Maybe I should take this wake up call as a sign. I shuffled back up the stairs, fumbled around with my kit and spilled out the front door. The walk to the river was a surreal one. Headlights had almost a solid texture to them as they cut through the murky haze. Eventually when I arrived to the riverside path it felt as if I was in poorly-rendered video game. A local man on his morning run passed me on my left and disappeared into the cloud within a few seconds. Then I came upon the local Chiswick moored boat. I had photographed this boat on a few other occasions at sunset in the past, but this perspective was completely different! It was as if I'd been transported into the loading screen from The Last of Us: Part II. Setting up my tripod and eyeing up my composition, a district line train could be heard making its way across the bridge. I really wanted the photo to capture the mystic feeling of such a rare morning so I dropped my shutter speed to 1/100th of a second to hopefully capture a little more light through the thick mesh and the tiniest amount more movement from the clouds surrounding me. Shooting at f/2.8 really allowed me to let in as much light as my lens would allow while also enabling the ghostly horizon to near melt into the background. I pressed the shutter and smiled, but this time it was genuine. It was at this point I realised just how incredibly grateful I am for early morning delivery drivers.
